Breast Implant Checks

Typically, all breast implants should be checked, especially once they reach the ten-year mark.

Dr Dilip Gahankari’s Implant Check Consultations are available to anyone with breast implants, regardless of where and when your surgery took place.

Implant Check Consultations will identify common issues which may potentially arise with implants such as capsular contracture, Breast Implant-Associated (BIA) ALCL, implant malpositioning, ruptured breast implants, rippling, post-surgical scarring and symptoms commonly associated with presumed Breast Implant Illness.

If necessary, a follow-up plan will be outlined.

What is involved in an Implant Check Consultation?

Your Implant Check Consultations will involve a detailed examination of your breasts and a clinical assessment of your medical history by Plastic Surgeon, Dr Dilip Gahankari.

Why do I need an Implant Check Consultation?

Capsular contracture can be a painful condition where the body reacts to the implant by forming scar tissue around it, often causing the implant to harden or fix into place.

This condition can also restrain natural movement and create an unnatural or even disfigured contour.

Implant Malposition is a distorted breast as a result of the implant being positioned incorrectly behind the breast. (Too high placement results in a bulge in the upper breast and a downward turned nipple; a too low placement makes the upper breast appear flat with an upward pointing nipple).

Ruptured Implants may be contained within the breast capsule (intracapsular); or it may have leaked into the breast tissue and body (extracapsular), which is more dangerous for your health. With a saline implant, rupture is often identifiable almost immediately, however a rupture in a silicone implant can take longer to be visible and more difficult to identify. If your implant has changed in shape or size, it may be indicative of a ruptured implant.

Breast Implant-Associated (BIA) ALCL is a rare lymphoma associated with breast implants, most commonly in textured breast implants. The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that the risk for textured implants is around 10 times higher (1 in 4,000 to 1 in 7,000) compared with implants with lower surface area texture (1 in 60,000). Generally, the occurrence of BIA ALCL is low, between 1/1000 and 1/10,000, however early detection is essential for effective treatment.
