Eyelid
Very dark circles or bags under the eyes, excessive skin or wrinkles surrounding the eyelids have the potential to create a puffy and tired appearance.
Eyelid surgery (known as a blepharoplasty) is a procedure that is designed to reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes as well as removing some excess skin.
This procedure may also address drooping upper eyelids, puffy bags above and below the eyes, extra upper-eyelid skin, and hanging, lower eyelid skin.
What is eyelid surgery?
Dr Gahankari typically performs a blepharoplasty procedure (sometimes called a “bleph”) using local or general anaesthesia.
Dr Gahankari will assess and mark the excess eyelid skin before the surgery.
The incisions are made within the natural creases of the eyelids, to reduce scarring.
Excess skin and muscle are then removed along with any fat bulges.
Dr Gahankari will then suture the incisions with very fine sutures.
In the case of lower eyelids, any excess skin and fat is removed conservatively to prevent any pull on the lower eyelid.
In lower eyelids the scars are typically located just below the eyelash margin so that they are minimally visible.
In some instances, laser technology may also be used.
Eyelid surgery may also be performed in conjunction with injectable treatments to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
What Results Can I Expect?
Results and recovery will vary for each patient.
This procedure may result in some double or blurry vision for a few days, temporary swelling at the corners of the eyelids, and milia (tiny whiteheads).
The stitches are removed in about 5-7 days after the eyelid surgery is completed.
Post-operatively, results are usually visible after a week or so when any swelling and bruising has subsided, but it may take up to six weeks to see the full results of your eyelid surgery.
A rare complication of eyelid surgery is blindness; however Dr Gahankari will discuss the procedure and any associated risks with you during your initial consultation.
